IMPORTANT NOTICE: As of July 1, 2017, ModelTalker has shifted to a fee-based model for voice banking services. If you registered as an AAC user to bank your voice, you must purchase your final voice before you will be able to download copies. This is necessary to sustain the service, but we are doing all that we can to keep costs as low as possible. Our process is largely unchanged. You first use our software to record your speech, we then build examples of your voice for you to audition, leading to a final version of your voice that is ready to download. To enable download of your voice, you will need to pay $100 USD by credit card, or arrange in advance for financial assistance with one of the organizations that have agreed to provide assistance (see our list of support organizations for possibly appropriate groups).

Whether you pay directly or arrange with an approved organization for support, the charge is a one-time fee. Once the fee is paid, you may download as many copies of your voice as you need for different operating systems or devices and we will keep a backup copy of your voice in our archive. For more information regarding our fee policy, and possible financial assistance, please see our FAQ regarding fees for more detailed information.

Your next step is to decide how you would like to do your recording. You have two choices:

  • Do your recording online using the Chrome web browser (recommended)
  • Download and install a Windows PC recording program (if you have windows and a poor internet connection)

If you have a reliable high speech internet connection, we recommend using our online recording tool. To use the online recorder, you must use a recent version of the Google Chrome browser; neither Safari nor Internet Explorer are presently compatible and recent changes to Firefox have made it problematic. The online recorder has an interactive setup and training process that will help you get started with the recording.

The Windows program, called MTVR, should work on most recent Windows PCs or Laptops and some Windows Notebooks or Tablets running Windows XP or later. It records your speech directly to your PC disk drive. You then upload the speech data to our server after each recording session. A tutorial on the recording process is included with the software. MTVR may be preferable if you do not have a broadband internet connection because you do not need to transmit much data back and forth while recording. However, MTVR has tended to be a bit more difficult for users to set up initially, and it does not provide feedback on speaking rate, which we believe to be an important factor in creating a good synthetic voice.

In the following, select which recording method you want to use and then click [Continue] to either download MTVR, or start using the online recording method. If you are not ready to do either at this time, click [Exit] instead. You will be able to return to www.modeltalker.org, login using your ModelTalker username and password and return to this page whenever you are ready to proceed.
